In 2017, the time I am writing this, the population of Cary, NC is estimated to be over 162,320. When I was 6 years old and first moved with my parents to Cary in 1968, there were approximately 7400 residents. I’ve been told that CARY means “Concentrated Area of Relocated Yankees”. With the Research Triangle Park initiated in the 1960’s and hosting large companies like IBM, a large population influx occurred leading credence to the “explanation” of the name.
Cary continues to grow and expand, but many children with who I grew up and attended school still have families here. Some have chosen to live here themselves, whether to be close to family, for job opportunities, or just to be “at home” in a community that still retains a somewhat small town atmosphere.
After life changes, including a divorce in 2014, I sold the house in northern Wake County where my family lived since 2001. I moved back into the Cary home where I grew up. To move from a 4600 square foot house to a 1100 square foot house that was already filled with furniture, necessities for living, and a lifetime of memories from my parent’s 60+ years of marriage was quite a challenge. I took everything I felt I needed, which was mostly clothing, in 1 large and 2 small suitcases, and a couple of small boxes. My 2 cats went into boarding because my Mother refused to have them in the house. Little did I truly realize the magnitude of dementia from which she was suffering. My father, who had always been the epitome of health, was beginning to wear down from a lifetime of hard work with the power company. My job and life mission took a u-turn and did a 360 all at once. I became my elderly parents caretakers. This leads to many other thoughts and topics too in depth to cover at this time!
I was now back home in Cary, after over 30 years, with just a bit more than the clothes on my back, minus my 2 fur babies to give me comfort. But with hopes and dreams for a life with something I’d truly been missing…..but had found a year earlier in Calcutta, India.
I have enjoyed reading this. I hope you will have a blessed new year filled with blessings, love and laughter. Until we meet again…… Bernie
